Ice Cream
Tongans love their ice cream and the confectionary is cool, sweet, enormous and inexpensive. There are two quality types of ice cream, with lots of flavours in each quality section (Jaffa is sensational!). Cost is T$1 or T$2 per scoop depending on quality type. Check out the Italian ice cream place on the corner of Wellington and Taufa’ahau Roads.
Immigration
Visitors must have a return or ongoing flight for entry into Tonga. You will be met by immigration officials at the airport who will stamp your passport allowing you to stay for up to 30 days. Extensions up to six months are possible but be sure to apply with plenty of time for processing. People who overstay their visas are harshly dealt with.
Imodium
Many travellers to the tropics get mild tummy upsets. This may not be the fault of the tropics as much as a change of time zone and diet and the body doesn’t like it (who has a cooked breakfast every day and those extra few beers every night at home?) While there are natural remedies like lots of water, packing Imodium or similar to take with you may come in handy. Common sense tells you to eradicate intestinal infections by flushing the system with fruit, juice and water but, if on holiday, some chemical ‘cement’ can make the stay more enjoyable.

Inoculations
Inoculations are not required (unless arriving within six days from an area infected by Yellow Fever). An up-to-date tetanus shot may be a good idea but if you experience a cut (coral or otherwise) you can always have one after the event.
Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended. As they say, if you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford to travel. Travel insurance is cheap - because most people don’t get to use it - but if you do, it could save you thousands of dollars. Flights get delayed, connections get missed, people get sick or have accidents and property does get stolen. Policies vary so check the fine print for your needs - e.g. pre-existing health conditions, whether extreme sports are covered, whether property is has new replacement value etc. A good policy for Australians travelling to the South Pacific is SureSave Travel Insurance (even covers your pets boarding if you are delayed getting home!)
Internet Resources
This site is designed as an overview for travellers and we are more than happy to answer any questions cost and obligation free - just email here. Other handy sites for info, maps and answers to FAQs:
Internet Services
Internet access is improving and will become less expensive - still not a lot just to check or send email. The Tonga Telecom Office on Salote Road can be busy (T$2 for 15 minutes) so may be better to try a café. There’s one on the ground floor of Tungi Arcade behind the Air New Zealand office (T$5 an hour) and Friends Tourist Centre next to Friends Café on Taufa’ahau Road (T$4 for 15 minutes)
Island Time
It can be frustrating and annoying and also totally wonderful - it’s what being in a tropical paradise is all about. Island time means things don’t happen when you think they should. What you thought would take no time at all will take forever but what you thought would take ages will be done in a flash. Let go, relax go with the flow and enjoy it. It’s a nice change and it helps you to live longer. Once you arrive the only deadline you have to keep is your flight out - and keep smiling if your airport transfer is early and your flight is delayed. I thank travel author David Stanley for the phrase, “The coconut will fall when it is ripe.”
