Vaccinations
Vaccinations are not required (unless arriving within six days from an area infected by Yellow Fever). An up-to-date tetanus shot may be a good idea but if you experience a cut (coral or otherwise) you can always have one after the event.
Vanilla Beans
Vanilla is one of the world’s great little flavour adders for milks and desserts and is one of Tonga’s cash crops for export. Local vanilla also helps make local ice cream sensational. The vanilla from Vav’au is among the world’s best and plantations there cover some 500 hectares. Grown 20 degrees either side of the equator it was first used by the Totonaca people of Mexico. Vanilla is also a great natural air freshener and is handy for making your fridge smell nice.
Vanuatu
Vanuatu is another rich and rewarding Pacific destination. Click here for the Vanuatu A to Z information website.
Vava’u
Vava’u is the most scenically beautiful region in Tonga. The harbours and waterways make it a magnet for cruising yachties and there’s plenty of accommodation for visitors who are attracted by watersports like kayaking, sailing, fishing, scuba diving and whale watching and it would be a shame to visit Tonga and not make it to this gem of the north. May to October is peak season for yachting and July to October for whale watching.
Virgin Blue
Virgin Blue is the parent company to Pacific Blue, operating direct flights to Tonga from Sydney and Auckland.
Visas
Australian and New Zealand citizens (and pretty much anyone really) do not require visas for a stay of up to 30 days. Visa extensions up to six months are possible but be sure to apply with plenty of time for processing. People who overstay their visas are harshly dealt with. More info...
Volcanoes
The active volcanoes of Tonga lie in a line 50km west of Ha’apai and Vava’u (Fonuafo’ou, Tofua, Lateiki, Late, Fonualei and Niuafo’ou). All have erupted in the last 200 years and, of these, the most accessible is Tofua.
