Yachting
Vava’u has the largest number of yacht charter operations in the South Pacific and the waterways are a magnet to cruising yachties (who also like socialising with other yachties). The yachting season is from March to October. If crewing on a yacht is of interest, ask around the Mermaid Bar & Grill and/or stick up a notice in the Bounty Bar and Ana’s Waterfront Café. This can be a fun and inexpensive way to get to Fiji but towards the end of the season most boats head south to New Zealand.
For yacht charter, head to The Moorings. They have a variety of well-maintained boats. Other operators include Sunsail and Sailing Safaris. Some say a yacht is just a hole in the water to throw money into and liveaboard yacht charter doesn’t come cheap either. Apart from the charter of the boat allow for provisioning, insurance, kayak on board etc and the cost of a skipper if you are a novice (they know how to spot that pretty quickly!). Here’s a link to Tonga Sailing.
Yachts usually don’t have washing machines of dryers so yachties are the main clientele at the Vava’u Laundry opposite The Moorings. Curiously, yachties with large loads of washing have been refused service by the Savoy Dry Cleaners in Nuku’alofa.
Yellowfin Tuna
Yellowfin is just one of the prized fine fighting fish found in the Tongan waters. Tonga is one of the world’s top sportsfishing destinations. Other big fish include Striped, Blue and Black Marlin, Pacific Sail Fish, Dogtooth Tuna, Spearfish, Wahoo, and Mahi-Mahi. See Game Fishing.
